Why is it so hard to lose weight and keep it off? We have all heard that weight loss is just a matter of taking in less calories than we expend. That certainly sounds very logical, but is it really that simple?

For example, I had an intention of only eating fruits and vegetables for a day or two, to counteract the recent ‘junk’ food I had been enjoying. This was a solid plan that practically guaranteed a decrease in caloric intake. However, a solid plan doesn’t always mean an easy execution.

I figured I would be relatively safe making a trip to the health food store. So my guard against high fat foods was down. When I got to the store, my sensibilities were assailed by a well meaning clerk hawking some freshly made corned beef and cabbage. I could hardly resist the temptation. And that wasn’t the end of it. Once my armour was breached, the temptation of tasty, ‘health oriented’ cookie samples fought for my attention.

Once again, I capitulated. My normally strong will power seemed to crumble. And once weakened, it seemed reasonable to just continue. It’s like that first drink for the recovering alcoholic.

I am by no means overweight, but once in a while my diet gets out of hand and the fat around my midsection gets a little more sizable than I am comfortable with. Usually, times like these are a great opportunity to get a little detoxification in, so I like to focus on fruits and vegetables for a day or two.

This has the dual effect of decreasing my caloric intake. I was also sticking with the simple plan mentioned above. So where did things go wrong? Did I not have enough discipline? Did I lack willpower, or was it something else?

In retrospect, the problem appears to be a lack of preparation. I failed to use the power of why. Let me explain. When the chips were down, I didn’t seem to have enough reason to maintain discipline. Maybe you have had a similar experience? I rationalized with, “oh, a little won’t hurt me”. The truth is, once you start down that road, it can be hard to turn back.

What would the right preparation be in that case? What is this power of why that I am talking about? A great way to fortify will power with any strategy is to actually write out the reasons why sticking to your plan or achieving your goal is important. It is kind of like stockpiling ammunition. The weaponry, in this case, appears in the form of a list.

With a long list of reasons supporting the plan or the goal, I would have had a lot more reserves to draw on when my front line defenses were being stressed. When the well meaning clerk was pouncing, I should have had a ready list of whys to fall back on. As the clerk was just being nice and sounding really sensible, plus it was a free sample after all, my mind should have responded with my ready made list of why I should not vary from my plan.

That didn’t happen because I never made such a list. Whatever you are trying to accomplish in life, there are bound to be obstacles and obstructions that just leap into your path to stop or block you. These are the times that you need your list. The list is your power. No list, no power.

When anyone sits down to plan something or set a goal, they need a list to support them during weak times. The longer the list, the better. Even if one has to carry the list along in one’s pocket, it is worth it. A list of about 50 reasons, while hard to create, can pay off in a major way.

Imagine the clerk’s surprise, had I pulled out my handy list and read it off for him. My armour would not have been pierced and the clerk would have had to move on to more ready prey or risk having the spear of temptation blunted! No list, no power.

Staying Motivated.

If you are trying to lose weight, you won’t get there by just starting an exercise program you must also stick to it!  This can be very challenging with all the temptations out there.  If you have spent most of your life on the couch it can be a big step to take on an exercise program.  It is worth it!  Think of how you will feel when you have shed all that extra weight.  Figure out how much you need to lose and think of an object (or child that weighs that amount) picture how you would feel carrying them on your shoulders all day!  You would be exhausted!  Is that how you feel now?  Imagine yourself that much lighter, all the things you would have the energy for!

You need to set resonable goals for yourself ie. a pound or two a week.  This may not seem like too much but the time is going to pass whether you are shedding the weight or not and if you set your goals too high you will fall off the wagon because if you make dramatic changes you are less likely to stick with it. 

Another way to keep track of your progress is to keep an exercise log.  Record your daily exercise.  Include your repititions.  Seeing how far you have come is very inspiring. 

Join an exercise group this is a great way to meet people with the same goals and interests as yourself.  They will be a great support for you and this new social network will help to keep you motivated.

Leave inspirational notes for yourself.  You can put these on your fridge or as a screen saver.  You could also find a picture of yourself looking your best .  If you have one that represents the weight you want to get back to you could post it on your fridge. 

You could also invest in home exercise equipment a treadmill, elliptical trainer, or free weights. Spending the cash could be a powerful incentive for making confident that you use the equipment frequently. Place the equipment in a prominent place so that you have to pass it often.  No excuses for not using it!  If you need to place it in front of a TV  and don’t allow yourself to watch from the couch until after you’ve done your workout.   

Invest in exercise videos or DVDs.  These are very convenience and allow you to exercise in the privacy of your own home.  

Place your runners by the door to remind yourself that you need to walk rather than drive.  Reward yourself for reaching your goals.  Make sure that your accomplishments are celebrated.

Throw yourself a party when you reach an exercise milestone.  Serve nutritious snacks and beverages and even encourage your guests to come in their athletic wear in order to build upon the party’s theme. Sharing your pleasure can help to motivate you to continue your physical activities. 

There is no right way to keep fit do what works for you and gives you results.  You may face setbacks from time to time, but DON’T STOP!  Just pick up where you left off and get going again.

There are so many weight loss options out there.  Which one is right?  Is there a magic answer that will work for everyone?  Should you do low-carb, low fat???  At last we have some answers.  A study from the New England Journal of Medicine study at lass answers these questions.  There was an article in the The Los Angeles Times (February 26, 2009)  that reported that the quantity of calories you get really does effect your weight.  What diet do they claim is the best?  Was it low-carb, low-fat,  high protein?  They said a diet either it is low in calories and saturated fats or high in whole grains, fruits and vegetables.  

Important things to remember:

1. Follow a weight loss diet low in calories and saturated fat

2. Find a weight loss diet that you can can stick with for life.

When you read health magazines you will come across fast weight loss methods.  Some methods work some don’t.   The best method is following a healthy diet and exercising.  The weight loss industry provides a lot of misleading information.  They twist the truth.  I will be discussing three weight loss myths in this article. 

Weight loss myths:

1. Spot reduction of fat:  You cannot spot reduce fat.  When you lose weight it generally comes off the last place you put it on.  You cannot make your body lose weight in a particular spot.  You can firm up areas of your body but this is not guaranteed to make you lose the overlying fat.  The best method is cardio exercise and calorie reduction. 

2. Quick Weight Loss:  If you cut your calories below a healthy level your body will go into survival mode and hold onto the fat with a death grip storing any extra calories that come in.  You need to healthfully reduce your calories.  Cut out empty calorie foods.  Eat nutrient rich foods often.  If your body feels deprived of nutrients it slows it’s metabolic rate and starts breaking down your muscles rather than fat.  If you continue depriving your body and eventually go back to a ‘normal’ diet you will pack on the pounds. 

3. You only need cardio exercise:  Cardio exercises can help you lose weight but they are not the only exercises to lose weight.  Building muscle is what helps you lose weight, weight lifting is a great way to build muscles.  Larger muscles help burn the fat.  If you are female use lighter weights with more reps because this will build long lean muscles rather than bulk you up.

Many are confused about what a healthy diet means. This is probably because their concept of diet is about losing weight, controlling food intake or food deprivation. This runs opposite of what healthy means. A healthy diet simply means eating the right food to improve health, prevent diseases and eventually enjoy life.

 Here is a sample healthy diet plan.

 Breakfast

 You can alternately have buttered toasts, baked potatoes, cereals and oatmeal. You can spread a spoonful of guava or strawberry jam in your buttered toasts once in a while to make it more appetizing. For your baked potato, you can sprinkle it with some bacon bits. You can add fruit bits and small vegetable slices to your cereals and oatmeal to make them more exciting. Have fruit juice on the side. Any of these will give you the nutrients that you need. You have carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

 Snacks

 Fruits should be your first option for snacks. A piece or two of banana is good. You can also have apples. As an alternative you can have oatmeal cookies or two slices of wheat bread.

 Lunch

You can have brown rice for lunch. A healthy serving of brown rice is the size of your fist. As a viand you can have steamed fish with buttered vegetables. You can also choose to have grilled red meat or broiled chicken.

 

Snacks

 

You can have the same choices as your morning snacks. You can also add in your selection yoghurt or a slice of cake. 

 

Dinner

 

For dinner you can have pasta. A healthy serving of pasta is also the size of your fist. A good choice of sauce is fresh tomato sauce or pesto sauce. You can also have mashed potato and a small slice of steak once in a while. A healthy serving of steak is about the size of a deck of cards. You can have salad on the side.

 

You can vary these choices to suit your needs. You just have to remember that you should have food from all food groups. Do not also forget to watch your portions. A healthy diet is easy to prepare. You can also be creative so that you enjoy eating healthy.

When you hear the word diet, what usually comes to mind? For many, diet is equivalent to losing weight. It is associated with food deprivation and starvation. It has received such a negative connotation that there are a lot of people who actually dislike it. But diet isn’t always bad. It only becomes that when you do not do it properly. If you want to go on a diet to be healthy, you should go for a healthy diet.  Here is a healthy diet plan that will help put a positive spin to the concept of dieting.

 

1.     Do not miss any major meal. That sounds great, right? It is important to have breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. Just always remember to eat small or moderate portions only.

2.     Have in-between meals. You might think this is crazy but this is true. It is better to eat small meals frequently than eat few but big meals.

3.     Eat a wide variety of foods. If other diets will ask you to miss this or that, a healthy diet won’t. It is important to have all the nutrients that your body needs, so do not substitute one for another. But again, take everything in right amounts.

4.     Eat vegetables and fruits. If you find them unappetizing, be creative. You can turn them into delicious shakes. Just go easy on the sugar. You can also slice them into nice shapes and dip them in light sauces like vinaigrettes. They can also be topped in your breakfast cereals or you can use them to fill your crepes.

 

The next time you hear the word diet, keep these things in mind. These should turn your negative perception of diet to a more pleasant one. Have a healthy diet!

If you are trying to lose weight there are many different kinds of diet products and programs available in the market today. They are being advertised on home TV shopping networks, online stores, magazines, newspapers and billboards. They are very attractive to people who are trying to lose weight because they use a lot of testimonials that sound good. They become even more attractive when Hollywood stars and popular sports personalities promote them. They become credible looking when health experts like doctors and nutritionists testify for to their effectiveness. With all these diet products and programs available how do you decide if what you are going to choose is a healthy diet or not?

 

1.     Be wary of fad diets. These are diets that usually sound too good to be true. If the product tells you that you will lose weight in just a few weeks, this product is not for you. A real and healthy diet is a lifestyle, not a magic formula.

 

2.     Be cautious of diets that will ask you to go heavy on a particular food group and miss on another. You should always remember that your body needs the nutrients from all the different food groups so missing on some will just make you unhealthy.  Many illnesses are caused by nutrient deficiency.

 

3.     Be careful of diets that will ask you to miss a major meal or offer a junk food as substitute for one. It is important to have all these major meals. You need them to have energy to do your work well. It is better to have three small meals than have two meals but big ones.

 

In choosing the best diet, always go for a diet that has your health and safety as the priorities. A healthy diet will never compromise your overall health.
