Losing weight has become a huge issue in our society. Many people are concerned about their weight, they feel pressure to be thin.
Geneen Roth, an author who has written many books about self-regulated eating, says “for every diet there is an equal and opposite binge”. That is, when you spend time obsessing about your weight it can actually make things worse. Nobody can survive deprivation forever – sooner or later, you will give in and your body, searching for needed nutrients will cause you to binge.
What can we do instead of dieting? Something called self-regulated eating is an option that Roth recommends. If you have spent years of your life on a diet, you have possibly lost track of what it feels like to eat because you are hungry and stop when you are full. This approach aims at making eating natural again. It’s simple if you’re hungry, eat. If you’re not hungry, don’t eat and stop when you are full.
Sound too simple doesn’t it? Can this really be the answer for long term weight loss? Tt isn’t. You may not lose weight quickly but it will be permanent. This is a natural way of eating, it will get your body back to its natural healthy weight. Some people gain initially because they go wild with the freedom, this will pass.
Do not try to live up to the fashion models we see in magazines. Only 1% of women physically have bodies that are proportioned like a fashion model’s, so it’s time for us to make peace and feel blessed for the bodies we were given.
This is exactly what the natural approach to eating can help you achieve. It’s been called an anti-diet. You may think, that if you consume whatever you want whenever you’re hungry, that you’ll end up eating only unhealthy, high-fat foods. That may be true at first, but those who have gone through this process will confirm that over time, your eating habits naturally will become healthier. The first week or so, you may end up eating too many cookies or chips. After that your body will start to crave vegetables or protein. It will all even out over time.
Scientific studies done with children have proven this. The children in the study were allowed to pick the foods they wanted to consume from a broad selection. At first, they all gravitated toward cake, chips and candy. Most likely the foods their parents restricted at home. A few days later they naturally switched to healthier foods. The children were never directed what to eat but virtually all the children ended up eating a nutritious, balanced diet.
This is why this eating plan doesn’t ban any foods. If you aren’t allowed a certain food you will want it all the more. When you get hold of it, you won’t be able to stop. If all foods are allowed, there’s no need to obsess about any of them. You can just give your body whatever you feel it needs, and over time, this will lead to easy, natural weight loss.
